What the fascia does

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof, behind the gutter. It closes off the ends of the rafters and carries the weight of a gutter full of water and, in winter, ice. When it rots, the gutter comes loose and water gets into the edge of the roof.

Why it rots

Almost always water: a gutter that overflows or leaks, or a roof edge that lets water run behind the gutter. Replacing the board without fixing the cause just rots the new one, so we look at the gutter and the edge of the roof as well.

Repair or replace

Short rotten sections can be cut out and replaced. Where the rot runs the length of the house, new fascia along the whole run is the better job, and it's the time to put the gutters back up properly.

Fascia, soffit and drip edge

The edge of a roof is made of a few parts that work together. The fascia is the board facing out, carrying the gutter. The soffit closes the underside of the overhang and often lets air into the attic. The drip edge is a strip of metal along the edge of the roof that sends water into the gutter instead of behind it.

When any one of them fails, the others usually suffer. That's why we look at the whole roof edge, not just the board that's visibly rotten.

Rot you can't see

Many houses have their fascia wrapped in aluminum. It looks tidy, but water that gets behind the wrap can rot the wood underneath out of sight, until the gutter starts to pull away. We check the board itself, not just the cover.

Keeping animals out

A rotten or broken fascia board leaves gaps at the edge of the roof, and birds, squirrels and other animals use them to get into the attic. Sound fascia and soffit close those gaps.

Check your roof edge from the ground

  • Peeling or blistered paint along the edge
  • Dark stains or streaks behind the gutter
  • A gutter that's pulling away or no longer straight
  • Gaps, holes or chewed wood at the corners
  • Birds or animals going in and out at the edge of the roof

When in the year

Spring through fall, usually alongside gutter work. Fall is a good time to catch it, before a winter of ice hangs off a weak board.

Questions about fascia installation & repair

Can you replace just the rotten section?

Yes, if the rot is in one place. If it runs the whole length, we'll recommend replacing the run.

Do I need new gutters with new fascia?

Not always. If the gutters are sound, we re-hang them on the new board.

What causes fascia to rot?

Water, almost always from the gutter or the roof edge. We fix the cause as well as the board.

My fascia is covered in aluminum. Can it still rot?

Yes. Water that gets behind the wrap can rot the wood underneath without it showing. We check the board itself.

Can animals get in through the fascia?

Yes. Rotten or broken boards leave gaps at the roof edge that birds and squirrels use to get into the attic.
