Why gutters matter to a roof
A gutter's job is to take the water off the roof and put it somewhere harmless. When it overflows or leaks, that water soaks the fascia behind it, runs down the walls and pools against the foundation. In a Mahoning Valley winter, a blocked gutter is also where ice builds up along the eave.

The gutter is only half the job. A downspout that empties right against the house puts all that water back where it does the most harm, against the foundation and into the basement. Downspouts should carry water away from the walls and onto ground that slopes away from the house.

Ice along the eaves can also back water up under the shingles. Clearing gutters in the fall, once the leaves are down, is the single best thing you can do for them.
